Search Engine Optimization

What is search engine optimization?

Search engine optimization is about making your web site rank higher on search engines for targeted keywords or phrases. These keywords are researched and identified as being the correct words and phrases to be targeted. This is carried out on a business-by-business basis. Once the correct keywords are identified they are added to your web page/s to ensure search engines find you.

Why would you invest in optimizing your web site for search engines and then just leave it?

Search Engine optimization is not a one-off task.

For it to be effective it needs to be reviewed and amended regularly since the various search engines regularly update their lists with site details. For some organisations it is a full-time job to stay at the top of these lists. This is where you have to ask yourself how important is it to be at the top. And are you being realistic in your expectations i.e. you are a seller of used computers and you are one of a market force of 3000 other used computer sellers. Simple maths should answer that question.

What else can you do to improve your status on-line?

To ensure you are fully or reasonably optimised in order for people who are aware of your organisation to find you quickly. To ensure you perform some sort of on-line marketing. If you are reasonably optimized and conduct some form of marketing you can then measure the success rate of your campaign efforts.

Importantly, as well as being a source of information a web site is a powerful marketing tool and as such takes time to get results and requires on-going exposure and continual work in order to create a higher rank on search engines to attract customers and keep them up to date on your area of expertise. As said before, it's not a task that is a quick one-off fix.

I have people contacting me regularly stating that they can optimize my site for better results!

Maybe it would be worthwhile finding out the small print and the costs involved before you embark on investing a considerable sum of never ending funds to such organisations. And maybe the service that such organisations are claiming works doesn't quite work in the manner you would expect. How should you rationalise it? As a suggestion, think along the lines of sums and competition i.e. your business is a shopping centre, one of five in a busy city. Anyone that searches for shopping centres in that city is likely to find you in the top five if your website has been properly optimized. Realistically, do you need to be the shopping centre at the top of the list?
